The Coincidence of Fate

I don’t remember why I started thinking about destiny, randomness, fate, serendipity and coincidence.

My personal non-dictionary definitions for coincidence and fate:

Coincidence: A striking occurrence of two or more events/circumstances at the same time apparently by mere chance.

Fate: The course of someone’s life or the outcome of a particular situation for someone/something beyond their control or as determined by a Higher power.

For most of my adult life, I’ve believed in fate more than coincidence. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.

So when things happen, good or bad, I try to look for the message or the lesson within the event. However, I will admit that when it is a negative event, it is a struggle to find “meaning”.

Fate or coincidence?

  • Taking a break on a bench in the middle of the Louvres in Paris and bumping into a high school classmate who I mentioned in conversation just a few weeks prior to my trip;
  • Wishing that I could spend “all day” as a kid at the local library and now working “all day” on the exact same site;
  • Wanting to buy a certain item and walking into it at a fraction of the cost during a shopping trip I hadn’t planned on taking?

I see this all as fate.

Do you believe in coincidence or fate? Or do you believe in a bit of both? Share your thoughts in the comment box below!
