October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
Remember, love is not abuse and abuse is not love.
You Were Once Like Her
Be patient because you were once like her, loving the attentiveness, the dozens of calls every day, his insatiable desire to be with you all the time, his protectiveness, believing him when he vowed that it was the two of you against the rest of the world.
Take a deep breath when she excuses his oversensitive nature and showers him with understanding and forgiveness to prove her love.
Be patient because you were once like her, walking on eggshells to keep the peace, desperately trying to avoid the stony silences and angry spells when the fog of love started to lift.
Don’t shake your head in disgust when she accepts his insults and the blame for the bruises hidden underneath her clothes because once upon a time, you were once like her.
Be patient because you can help her see that the tightness in her chest, the racing of her heart, the sweat beading above her lip and the constant pain in her gut when he steps into a room will kill her, if he doesn’t kill her first.
She hasn’t yet realized that his tears and words are weapons to make her stay and his fists are his poison to keep her down where he needs her to be.
Be patient because you can help her understand that it’s not about her and that she can’t fix what is dangerously unfixable.
Like you once did, she’ll mourn the death of who she used to be and learn to embrace the warrior that quietly lurks within, the warrior she never knew.
