Living In A Box #amwriting #soaps

I fell into some old forgotten items that were hidden away so I’ll be living in a box for the next few posts.

Elementary school book reports, not-so-good poetry, my Prince Charles and Lady Diana scrapbook, childhood short stories I wrote… I had a good laugh sifting through these stories, realizing just how soap opera-ish my writing was.

The Edge of Night, Search for Tomorrow, Days of Our Lives, Another World and Texas…my family watched lots of soaps.

I’m not kidding. When one soap went off the air, we simply replaced it with another. Oh yeah, we loved our soaps and those Friday cliffhangers that made you look forward to Monday’s episode.

As a teenager, I had a secret desire of becoming a soap opera writer, that is, until I attended a writer’s conference and made the mistake of saying that out loud at a round table session.

“Why would you want to do that dear?” one of the conference speakers asked me. The “dear” was probably because I was the only “younger” participant there (actually, technically still a teenager among a room of adults) and her use of “that” was her way of avoiding saying the word “soap“.

Was “soap” such a bad word to her?

“You would be much better off writing a novel or a movie script dear.”

Okay… so maybe my soap writing desire did fall into the same category as when I wanted to be like Vicki Barr in the Flight Stewardess Series I devoured in elementary school but I still thought that the idea was cool… 🙂

Growing up, what did you dream of becoming?

  1. Actually that sounds kind of fun. How can you kill off the lead make character and bring him back most shockingly but not too much. And how will he reunite with his wife (he divorced her twice and cheated on her six times) whose married to her third husband (but had kids with three former husbands not including the lead male character) and not become an evil character for too long…. lots to f possibilities. Maybe fun for a while but forever lol.

  2. Girl! What you know about “Search For Tomorrow” and “The Edge of Night”?? Haven’t heard those names in years!

Did you watch Secret Storm too? How about The Doctors? My preschool self and my sibs were part of mom’s “routine”. Certain things had to be done by certain times…so she could see her stories! 😄

In our teens, we did a soap parody at a family reunion – “Search For The Edge of Tomorrow” – good times! 😄😉

  3. I haven’t heard of most of those names, but I see what you mean. Guiding Light was my guiding light to something decent and good being on. Lol. It went off air but soaps now on CBS are so pretentious and dull.
They need writers and your stories are better.

Great blogs thrive because of comments and readership. I'd love to hear from you!
