Continued from “Feelin’ Single”
I’d been crying for so long that I hadn’t realized my shoulder was wet from the open car window. I quickly closed it.
When had it started raining?
My cell started buzzing with a series of texts. Without looking, I already knew what they were going to say.
Where are you? You said that you’d only be out for an hour.
How long does it take to have one coffee?
When you’re with your friends, you forget all about me.
I wiped away my tears and called Ella.
“What’s up Vicky?”
I could hear music in the background. Ella was probably prepping the girls at the club.
“If he calls or texts you, just roll with it okay? I told him that we went for coffee.”
“No problem.” I heard the concern in her voice. “Where are you? Are you okay?”
Ella was the kind of friend who would drop everything to help.
“I’m fine. I’m in my car near the coffee shop we usually go to. I just needed some space to think.”
Ella sighed hard and muttered a string of colorful profanities.
“What did he do now?”
“Same old, same old.”
“Vicky, a jealous and insecure man is a world of trouble. It will only get worse. Kick him to the curb.”
“Easier said than done when you’re engaged.”
“Vicky, a half-assed proposal with no ring and no planned wedding date means nada. And even if you were….”
“I know, I know. I’ll call you later okay?”
I hung up gently before she could lecture me. My cell started blowing up again.
Where are you? Who are you really with?
I went through the paces of my mental checklist.
I really did go to the coffee shop so the GPS and my coffee receipt would back me up. The call to Ella listed on the cell log was explainable. And if I left right away, I’d be able to say that I was driving and couldn’t answer his texts.
All of my bases were verifiable, believable and covered. If nothing else, I’d become versed in keeping steps ahead of him.
I put the car in gear, flicked on the windshield washers and hurried home.
