Continued from “You Look Good In My Shirt.”
I sat at the gate with my boarding pass at the ready.
But was I really ready?
The waiting area was overflowing with travelers. I distracted myself by analyzing the emotions I saw on the faces and conversations around me.
The newlyweds sitting across from me couldn’t keep their hands off of each other. The older couple to my left were headed to a funeral. After being banished for a month to her grandparents in Gurabo, the teenage girl face-timing to my right was ecstatic to get back home to the boyfriend her parents didn’t want her to have.
I wondered what they saw on my face when they looked at me.
A woman wanting to stay in a paradise that felt too good to be true with Alejandro, Nate and Alma?
Or a woman longing to get back to the cozy life she’d just created for herself and to Tyler who kept life interesting?
The ringtone for Ella startled me and I scrambled to answer my cell. No “hi”, “hello” or “how are you?”, Ella was straight to the point.
“Are you staying or leaving?”
“I’m actually sitting at the gate like an idiot, not knowing what I should do.”
I heard Ella sigh in the way she always did when the answer was clear to her but for no one else.
“You don’t know your up from your down Laney. You know that I’m not into all this love shit, but maybe this is the time you need to go with your heart and not with your head. Home is not a place, it’s a feeling.”
Ella hung up, leaving me to marinate in her non-advice.
I looked down at my boarding pass, closed my eyes and tried to hear what my heart was saying.
My head knew exactly what I should do but my heart whispered that it had other plans.
The End…for now. Thanks for reading! This storyline will be made into a novella in the near future.
