Growing up in a large family, I got used to living with noise.
Actually, I need background noise to work, study and write. I always have a radio, tv or a podcast on most times to keep my company.
The other day, a podcaster said that one day a week, he enjoys some “silent time”. No talking, no noise of any kind because it makes him feel centered.
I decided to give it a try (and this also relates back to #6) and though it took a few attempts to get comfortable with it, for a few Sunday mornings, I understood what that podcaster meant.
Nothing but the hum of the furnace cranking on and off to heat the house, the creaking of the floors beneath my feet whenever I make my way to the kitchen for another cup of coffee and the distant crunching of car tires against the snowy-covered streets outside.
Something about the quietness of it all is indeed “centering.
I can’t promise myself that I will do this on a weekly basis but I will do this more often.
Have you ever thought about having “silent” time?
