What’s the worst piece of advice you’ve ever been given? Day 5

What’s meant to be yours will come to you“.

This is a “nice” piece of advice but getting what we want in life requires taking steps, doing the work and placing ourselves in situations, no matter how uncomfortable, so that those “things” can actually find us. I believe in doing all that you can reasonably do to reach your goal and then leaving it to the universe.

I mean, your dream job is not going to fall into your lap if you don’t send out resumes or network with those who may be in a position to help you, right?

What’s meant to be yours will come to you” irks me even more when this is said by people who don’t want you to get what you want and actively take steps to disrupt your plans.

So when I hear this advice, I often take it with a grain of salt depending on the advice giver.

  1. “Time heals all wounds.”

Definitely one of the worst advice given to me because I find it so dismissive at times, especially after I’ve poured my heart out to someone about the hurt I’ve encountered, and get this response.

  2. I think the one that pushes my buttons more so than anything is “It’s ok, you tried. maybe next time” It negates any positive effort or partial successes made, and leaves you feeling like a failure. Meanwhile people are climbing over you to take your place. What they didn’t know is that condescending statement is a challenge accepted!

    1. I never looked at it that way but thanks for saying it. I’ll think twice before these words ever leave my lips again. I usually say “It’s ok at least you tried” but rarely “maybe next time” because I’m often of the mind that something better may come along.

  4. “Put a wiggle in that walk.” Psychiatrist’s advice on how to cure infertility. It didn’t work, imagine that. But I researched the heck out of my problem and figured out what it actually was. We have our wonderful tween as a result.

    1. What a stupid thing to tell someone? And coming from someone who likely has a “Dr’ as a title makes it even worse. More power to you for figuring out what you needed to know.

  6. Yes, I used to hear that one a lot after being denied so many opportunities and being looked over. Also, I hate when people use this an excuse not to try…sometimes it Church folk. And I just say, “Faith without works is dead.” Now get off yo butt and do something about your situation.

Lol! That is lame advice. That’s almost as bad as, “You can do anything, as long as you set your mind to it.”

  8. Yes… this is bad. I think it encourages sitting back and just letting things happen around you. You know what’s sad? I think part of my brain actually believes this piece of advice. I think it’s why I am stuck and can’t motivate myself to do anything. I think somewhere in my head, I feel like I am the way I am because that’s how it was meant to be. Kind of makes me feel like there’s nothing I can do about it… like it was predestined.
