I had a wicked headache so I left work early and headed home.
Since Sam was working from home, I decided to swing by our favorite Thai restaurant for some take out and surprise him for an early dinner. I made my way through the traffic, finally pulling up to the house. I parked the car on the street in front of the house instead of the driveway just in case Sam planned on heading to the gym or the office.
Balancing my purse and briefcase, I tried not to spill the bag of takeout as I fished out my keys and swung the door open. I could hear Sam on a hands-free conference call so as quietly as I could, I shut the front door, slipped off my heels, left my purse and briefcase next to them and padded my way to the kitchen. I placed the bag on the kitchen counter, shoved the keys into my pocket and grabbed a bottle of water from the fridge. I didn’t want to interrupt him so I crept a little closer to the doorway to hear where he was at with his call. I was just about to head to see him when I heard his friend’s Jack’s voice through the speakerphone.
“You had better be fucking sure Sam! Otherwise, you’re going to royally fuck things up with Isabella.”
Jack wasn’t just a fellow co-worker of Sam’s but he was also a longtime friend of his. From the tone of Jack’s voice, he was angry. Very angry.
“You had better be sure about this before you do something stupid or say something to Izzy.”
My blood ran cold at the mention of my name. What the hell was going on?
“I’m sure, Jack. Well, I’m pretty sure – I think.”
This conversation had absolutely nothing to do with work and everything to do with me. Panic and curiosity kept me standing where I was.
“On a scale of 1 to 10, how sure are you?”
There was a silence and I could hear Sam thinking.
“On a scale of 1 to 10? I’d say and 9.”
Oh my God! Was he finally going to ask me to marry him?
I heard Jack mutter something unintelligible.
“That’s totally insane man! That’s just your dick talking, not your head Sam. You’ve got something really good with Izzy and you’re going to scrap it all because you’re listening to your dick?”
My heart stopped. I could feel the vomit bubbling at the back of my throat, realizing what this conversation was all about.
“Are you in love with her?”
“Of course I’m in love with Izzy.”
“No, you asshole. I’m talking about the other girl.”
“I don’t know, maybe. It’s possible to love two people at the same time, isn’t it?”
“Yeah, I’m sure that it’s possible but I’m positive that’s not your case. Your dick might be in love with what that girl’s been doing to you but not your heart.”
“I don’t know anymore. Look, I just need to talk this out with you. This girl has got me twisted. She’s hot and so easy to be with. She’s interested in everything I say and do. She’s like a breath of fresh air and kinda like what Izzy used to be. I don’t know…”
“Well Izzy’s not some twenty-something girl anymore and she shouldn’t be. Life moves on and we all grow up. You’re gonna have to make a choice. It’s not fair to Izzy. Over all the years, she’s only been good to you and this is what you’re gonna do to her?”
I could hear that Jack was on the verge of blowing a gasket. I was too shocked to even appreciate his strong words about me.
“Sam, I can’t be part of this and will not support you in this lie. I just won’t.”
There was another long silence.
“So do you think I should tell her?”
“I’m not telling you what to do but you had better be careful. Have you been sleeping with both of them all this time?”
I sucked in my breath and waited for him to answer even though I already knew the answer. A cold sweat formed above my lip and my eyes began to water.
For months, I’d tried to rekindle the fire between us but he was disinterested. At first, I had thought that he was having a few issues with his manhood and was maybe embarrassed to talk to me about it. Then, I had been worried that he no longer found me attractive and had me doubting myself as a woman. But now I knew better and the mystery was solved. All this time, Sam was probably banging what the younger generation called a side-chick. Or was it a side-piece? His newly found interest in disappearing to the gym over the past six months had nothing to do with getting healthy.
“No, Izzy and I haven’t fucked in months.”
Yeah, six months to be exact.
“Because she doesn’t want to or because you’ve been banging this other girl?”
How long could a person go without breathing? I held my breath again.
“You know what Jack? I need to get my head straight on my own and I don’t want to talk about this anymore. Let’s just finish this file that were working on, okay?”
The conversation between Sam and Jack turned direction and they began discussing some merger that needed to be regulated.
I quietly backed away from the doorway until I bumped back hard into the kitchen counter behind me. I took a deep breath to steady my nerves before grabbing the takeout and heading back to the front door for my purse and my briefcase. I couldn’t be bothered to put my heels on so I grabbed them and headed back to the car barefoot.
I dumped everything into the trunk, including my heels and crawled into the driver’s seat. As I put the key into the ignition, I didn’t know where i was going but I knew that I had to be anywhere but here.
